Men want to get bigger; women want to get smaller

I’ve been fighting a battle with my Junk Mail box.For too long I was plagued by a Junk Mail box filled with subject lines that included the words “enlarge,” “bigger,” and “penis”—irritating considering I don’t own the appropriate body part. I used to just delete the messages, but eventually I got tired of the irritating negativity being part of my day. I staged an all-out war to prevent such messages from ever reaching me in the first place.

I succeeded, for the most part. But now those messages have been replaced. Now the messages target the female me, all right, but the words changed to “reduce,” “lose,” and “diet.”

Men want to get bigger; women want to get smaller.

It’s troubling. Why can’t people love themselves as they are? Why do people believe that changing a physical attribute will suddenly make them happy? Thousands of years of human experience have shown that to be untrue.

Dear Irritating Junk Mail Creators:

I don’t want to enlarge any part of myself. Nor do I want to go on a diet that makes me look like Natalie Portman in Black Swan.

Thanks anyway.

Yes. I like Julia Cameron’s views on perfection: Perfection is not the search for the best in ourselves; it’s a search for the worst – the part that tells us that nothing we do is ever good enough. Same goes for appearance, I guess.
