Every once in a blue moon

According to one definition, (two full moons in the same calendar month) today’s full moon is a blue moon.

Blue moons are rare, hence the expression, “Every once in a blue moon . . .” used to precede descriptions of things that happen rarely.

I use it to describe foods that I allow myself to indulge in only occasionally because to eat them often would be bad for my health. Every once in a blue moon I eat poutine.

I use it to describe luxuries that I really enjoy but don’t indulge in often because I’m not in Justin Bieber’s tax bracket. Every once in a blue moon I enjoy a hot stone massage.

I use it to describe activities that I enjoy and that I can easily afford but don’t often do because I’m just out of the habit, or there always seem to be more pressing things on the agenda. Every once in a blue moon I spend an entire afternoon browsing the shelves at a bookstore.

And I use it to describe things I wish would happen more but that don’t happen often due to reasons beyond my control. Every once in a blue moon I sleep in. I would love to sleep in more often. I’m just wired in a morning person kind of way.

What kinds of thing happen every once in a blue moon in your life?
