Advent Conspiracy

What is Christmas all about?

Love. Compassion. Sharing. Family. Friendships. Joy. Gratitude.

No, really. What is our modern Christmas all about?

To-do lists. Credit card bills. Too much to do in too little time. Traffic jams. Delicate family situations. Useless gifts.

As this video by The Advent Conspiracy points out, Americans spend $450 billion on Christmas each year.

$450,000,000,000.

In 2006, five pastors decided to make Christmas a revolutionary event by encouraging their faith communities to Worship Fully, Spend Less, Give More and Love All. They created The Advent Conspiracy to encourage people to give the gift of clean water to people in need. They want to redirect some of that $450 billion away from useless gifts and toward clean water projects. No money flows to or through The Advent Conspiracy. They encourage people to make this principle work in their lives however they can.

In our family, my two teenagers would not like a Christmas without any gifts, so we will have wrapped presents under the tree. But, we will also donate to Ryan’s Well Foundation.

As Christmas approaches, worship fully, spend less, give more and love all.

The gift I am most excited about this year is the one I am giving my parents. I am giving them the gift of literacy. Not for them, they have lived a life enriched by the power of reading. This is for two women who we don’t know, will never meet and will never see the huge impact that basic reading will have on their lives. But we do know that it will change their future.
